A seismogram is simply a record of the vibration of the ground, as shown in the image below. It shows the recording of a magnitude 3 earthquake in the Fond Parisien area by a Raspberry Shake seismological station located in Pétionville, about 60 km away. The earthquake was too small and far away to be felt – but the station was very sensitive and recorded it perfectly!

The seismogram contains information — seismological data — that can be used by seismologists to locate earthquakes and determine their magnitude.

Ground vibrations recorded by a RaspberryShake seismometer located in Pétionville during an earthquake in the Fond Parisien area in January 2019. It can be clearly seen that the movement starts a little after 17:46:30 (P-waves) and increases strongly about 7 seconds later at about 17:46:37 (S-waves).
